OF DESIGN
an object and reflect back to the optic
nerve in a human’s eye, the sensation
they perceive is called colour. Artists
and designers use colour to depict
and describe the subject. Colour is
used by designers to portray mood,
light, depth and point of view.
Designers use the colour wheels and
the principle of colour theory - a set
of guidelines for mixing, combining
and manipulating colours to create
colour schemes.
• Texture is one of the elements of
design that is used to represent how
an object appears or feels. Tactile
texture is a physical sense of touch,
whether it is rough, smooth or
ribbed. Visual texture on the other
hand, refers to the imagined feel of
the illustrated texture which can
create more visual interest and a
heightened sensory experience.
• Light. Quality lighting is integral to
any space, whether its sources are
natural light or artificial lighting, or a
combination of both. Mood lighting
sets the tone in a space. Creating a
balance between natural light and
artificial light will ensure the space
looks great all the time. When
choosing the lighting for a room,
think about factors like the colour of
the light, the lighting intensity and
whether the light should be dimmable.
• Pattern. A pattern intentionally
repeats forms, lines or other
interior design elements. Patterns
add interest and excitement to a abstract, floral or geometric shapes Addressing each of these elements
